This 100% linen scarf is dyed using the traditional Japanese natural indigo (aizome) method. Lightweight yet offering a beautiful sense of volume, it drapes softly around the neck or over the shoulders. It provides comfortable warmth in cooler months and is also ideal to carry during warmer seasons, offering a light layer in air-conditioned spaces.
Natural indigo dyeing relies on fermentation. To create a fermenting indigo vat, warmth, alkalinity, and nutrients are essential. Traditionally, the alkaline environment is produced using materials such as wood ash lye, lime, caustic soda, or soda ash.
For this scarf, the indigo was fermented with wood ash lye (lye made from burned ash) resulting in a more natural and traditional approach to indigo dyeing. The color reflects the depth and softness unique to this method.
Beautifully and organically hand-dyed by textile artist and dyer Yuko Takizawa in Mashiko.
