Updated: U.S. Customs & Tariff Changes for Orders from Japan

As we informed in a previous blog post and newsletter, the U.S. government introduced an important change to import tariffs that went into effect on August 29, 2025. While the situation has been somewhat unclear, we now have more concrete information.

De Minimis Tarrifs Exemption End

Starting August 29, 2025, all packages shipped to the U.S. will be subject to import duties, regardless of their value. Items that were previously duty-free under the $800 de minimis exemption will now incur tariffs.

The New Tariff Rate

According to the latest information, a 15% tariff rate is expected to apply to goods originating from Japan, with some exceptions. In addition, a processing/customs fee may be charged by the carrier upon delivery.

Earlier reports suggested that a flat $80 fee would apply per item or parcel, regardless of value; however, the 15% rate appears to be the more accurate estimate at this time.

Japan Post Service Suspension

Due to recent changes in U.S. customs regulations, Japan Post/USPS postal services are temporarily unavailable for shipments to the United States. All orders to the U.S. will be shipped via UPS until further notice.

Important Information About Cancellation

We’re truly sorry, but once an order has arrived in the U.S., we are unable to cancel it or issue a refund due to customs and tariff charges. UPS pays duties in advance on behalf of the recipient, and if a package is returned to Japan, we are charged not only for those duties but also for substantial return shipping costs and warehouse storage fees.

As a small business, these expenses are unfortunately too high for us to absorb. We kindly ask for your understanding and encourage you to keep this in mind before placing your order. Thank you very much for your continued support.

We will continue monitoring the situation and update you as more details become available. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support during this period of change.
