Yabase Clay Doll {Bird Whistle}

This small clay bird whistle in the shape of a pigeon is handcrafted in Akita, northern Japan. It is called Yabase Doll which is a traditional folk toy of Akita.
When blown from the tail it makes a low whistling sound "coo coo".
It was not only enjoyed as a toy, but it is said to have also been used to treat when the food got stuck in the throat by blowing this bird whistle "coo coo" in the old days.

Each piece is carefully handcrafted and the final details are done with hand-painting, so expect slight variations to each piece.

ABOUT YABASE DOLLS

Yabase Doll is a traditional folk toy of Akita prefecture in the north of Japan. Yabase Dolls are simple handmade clay figures that are said to have been produced in the Yabase area in Akita since the mid-Edo period (1603-1867), and about 90 kinds of dolls that are of lucky symbols have been produced by artisans.

In 2014, the last surviving artisan Tomo Michikawa passed away, and the art with over 200 years of tradition faced the risk of being lost. Intending to convey the culture to future generations, several people who love the Yabase Dolls established the group "Yabase-ningyo densho no kai" (Association for conveying Yabase dolls) and they have since created new dolls and preserved old ones.

Returns Policy

We will only provide a refund in the event of damaged or defective items that we cannot replace. If you wish to return or exchange an item you must first contact us within 7 days of arrival by email at hello [at] uguisustore.com

Pre-ordered or Backordered items, sale or discounted items can not be returned.

We will not be able to accept return or exchange of items if contacted after 7 days of arrival, so please make sure to open the package and check the contents as soon as the package arrives.

All customers are responsible for shipping costs as well as duties on all returned items. We can not refund shipping if the package has already been shipped.

When the package for your order gets returned to us after no re-delivery is arranged when you needed to, we can resend you the package but you will need to pay for the postage again. If you choose to cancel the items, we can refund the amount for the purchased items but not the postage as it has already been shipped and is totally non-refundable.
