These traditional Japanese wa-rousoku candles are crafted from 100% sumac wax, derived from the fruit of Japanese Ha-ze (wax trees) grown in the Chikugo region of Kyushu.
The TOHAKU series is inspired by the atmospheric pine forests depicted in the paintings of Tohaku Hasegawa, one of Japan’s greatest artists, originally from Nanao City in Ishikawa Prefecture—also the hometown of Takazawa Candle, who has been making candles since 1892.
This listing is for a single large TOHAKU candle, with an approximate burn time of 4 hours, presented in a simple paper-lidded box.
Please note:
A candle stand is not included. These candles require a stand that fits their size. We recommend the KOMA Large stand or Round Cast Iron Candle Stand for best fit and performance.

When freshly made, the candles may appear darker in color, but they will naturally whiten over time, developing a beautiful patina.
Unlike traditional wa-rousoku, which are crafted entirely by hand without the use of molds, TOHAKU candles are made using molds—but each one is still carefully handmade with great attention to detail.
