Sasano ittobori, literally "one-knife carving," is a folk art of Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku region of Japan. It is a wooden figure carved with a single blade called sarukuri, a specialty of the Sasano area in Yamagata handcrafted by skilled artisans.
Sasano ittobori figures are most commonly painted with colors showing the birds' details, however this solid black eagle has been finished with binchotan charcoal paint - a contemporary take on the traditional folk art.
