Itaya Craft is a traditional craft of Kakunodate in Akita prefecture, northern Japan with over 200 years of history. Itaya Craft involves whittling thin strips of wood -locally grown young maple tree (itaya-kaede)- and weaving them together, most of which is done by hand. It is said that it was originally established as a winter side business of a farming village and it was farm tools that were commonly produced.
Itaya Uma Horse is also a very popular folk toy and its blend of deep tones created from the simplicity of the Itaya maple tree’s white bark.
You can choose the patterns and sizes, however there may be slight variations in the size and details due to the nature of handmade items and the natural material.
