Sashiko Santoku Bag [Large] : D
Pickup currently unavailable
A beautiful handmade pouch featuring traditional Japanese sashiko embroidery on vintage aizome (indigo-dyed) fabric. Each piece is meticulously hand-stitched by ITOTSUZURI, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design.
This type of pouch was originally known as Santoku-bukuro, which translates to “three benefits pouch” or “three-way pouch.” Its origins date back to the Edo period (1603–1868), when it was used to carry small personal items.
The fabric used is vintage Japanese aizome boro - textiles that have been patched and mended using traditional sashiko stitching. Boro embodies the philosophy of "mottainai" (a sense of regret over waste), where worn textiles are strengthened and beautified through layers of handwork, resulting in one-of-a-kind patterns and textures.
The large-sized pouch is ideal for carrying an iPad mini, A5 notebooks, glasses, or other small essentials. While it is not padded, it is made with a double layer of cotton fabric for added strength and structure.
Each pouch is completely hand-sewn and features unique sashiko embroidery on both sides - no two are ever the same.
This design [D] features a mix of traditional patterns, including Takeda Hishizashi, Kakinoha (persimmon flower), Komenoha (rice flower), and Kaikoga (silkworm moth).
Other designs and sizes are also available. View the entire collection here-->

WAHT IS SASHIKO?
*Sashiko is a type of traditional Japanese embroidery/stitching which dates back to the Edo period (1603–1867) - a technique that was born out of practical necessity in northern Japan where many people were extremely poor and winters were too harsh for cotton to grow. To extend the lifespan of clothes, a worn-out piece was stitched with layers of old cloth to increase strength with this durable embroidery.
