Kutami Shibu-Uchiwa Washi Paper Fan
Kutami Shibu-Uhiwa is a paper fan that has been handcrafted for 400 years in Kutami in Kyushu and is one of the traditional crafts of Kumamoto prefecture. Persimmon tannin (kaki-shibu) has been applied over washi paper as a coating to make the fan strong and durable as well as to protect against insects as persimmon tannin works as insect repellent and antibacterial protection. Kutami Uchiwa is made to last for decades, or for 100 years if treated well. The colour of the fan gets darker and ages beautifully. Hemp leaf pattern is printed on one side.
